The priests and the elders conspire to kill Jesus
The three synoptic gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke recorded
the story of the conspiracy of the Chief priests and the elders of the Jews, to
arrest Jesus and kill him.
Exactly two days to the Passover and the feast of Unleavened
Bread, the chief priests and the scribes came together, trying to find ways by
which they could arrest Jesus secretly and put him to death.
The priests and elders were however cautious about how they
went about the whole business, lest they incur the displeasure of the people
and cause them to riot.
Luckily for them, one of the disciples of Jesus, named Judas
Iscariot, went of his own accord to the chief priests with the intention of
betraying Jesus. When the chief priests heard Judas’ intention, they were very
happy and promised to pay him money.
From this moment forward, Judas looked for the best
opportunity to betray Jesus where there was no crowd or in the midst of few people.
