The first missionary journey and events at Salamis and Paphos
THE FIRST MISSIONARY
JOURNEY AND EVENTS AT SALAMIS AND PAPHOS
In the church of Antioch were many teachers and prophets. There
was Barnabas, Lucius, Manaen and Paul. One day, as they were worshiping and
fasting, the spirit of God told them to set apart Paul and Barnabas for a
special work He wanted them to do. After they had laid their hands on them,
they sent them away on the first missionary journey with John accompanying
them.
The trio travelled to Seleucia, Cyprus till they got to
Salamis, where they preached in their Synagogue. They went through the whole
Island and when they got to Paphos, they encountered a false prophet called
Bar-jesus, meaning Elymas.
The proconsul of the town was called Segius Paulus and a man of
great intelligence. He invited Paul and his team over because he wanted to hear
the word of God. Bar-jesus was with the proconsul when Paul and his men got
there and this Bar-jesus man would not allow the proconsul to hear the word
from Paul. So Paul rebuked him and cast a temporary blindness upon him by the
name of God. When the proconsul saw what had happened, he believed
There in Paphos, John left the team and went back to
Jerusalem but Paul and Barnabas went on to Perga in Pamphylia.
