The call of Abraham
Abraham’s father was called Terah and he was living in Ur of
the Chaldeans with his family which included Abraham and his wife, Sarai, Abraham’s
brother Haran and his son was Lot.
One day, Terah took Abraham, his wife Sarai and Lot the son
of Haran to go to the land of Canaan. On their journey, they arrived at a place
called Haran. The family tarried in Haran and lived their life there.
After some time, Terah died. When Terah died, God told Abraham
to leave Haran and go to a place he would reveal to him. God promised that he
would make a great nation out of him. He would bless him and make him great. God
also said, he would bless those who bless him and curse those who curse him.
At the age of 75, Abraham left Haran with his wife and Lot his
nephew and journeyed toward Canaan. He carried all the riches they had gathered
in Haran. They also took along the people that they gotten while in Haran.
In the land of Canaan, Abraham and his entourage journeyed further
till they got to Shechem, and to the oak of Moreh. By the time they arrived in
Canaan, there were already people inhabiting the land. They were called
Canaanites.
In Canaan, God appeared to Abraham and promised to give the
land of Canaan to his descendants. Then Abraham built an altar to the Lord who
appeared to him. After that he moved to the mountains, on the east of Bethel,
to his west was Ai. It was here that Abraham erected his
tent. Here too, Abraham built an altar to the Lord and prayed to him.
Abraham continued his journey toward the desert which is also
called the Negeb.
