The aims and objectives of the national Congress of British West Africa
Introduction
The national Congress of British West Africa was formed in
1917 through the initiative of Mr. J.E. Casely hayford of the Gold Coast. Another
founding member was Dr. Akinwade Savage, a Nigerian then resident in the Gold Coast.
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
West African Federation
One of the aims and objectives of the National Congress of
British West Africa was the call for the establishment of a federation of all
the British colonial territories in West Africa.
Reforms in the colonial system
Another aim of the National Congress of British West Africa
was that the colonial system must be reformed in all the British colonial territories
in West Africa.
Inclusion of educated elite colonial administration
The National Congress of British West Africa also wanted the
British to include the educated elite in the administration of the various colonies
in British West Africa.
African representation on the Councils
In addition, the National Congress of British West Africa wanted
African representation in both the Legislative and Executive Councils in the
colonies.
Forge unity among leaders
Finally, the National Congress of British West Africa aimed
at bringing together all the effective leaders in the four British West African colonies
of Nigeria, Sierra Leone, The Gambia and The Gold Coast.
