Introduction
I his life and ministry, Jesus taught the people on many subjects, in parables. One of the subjects he taught on was good neighbourliness and he used the parable of the good Samaritan to illustrate his point.
The parable of the Good Samaritan was narrated by Jesus in
response to a question from a lawyer. The lawyer first wanted to know what he
must do to inherit eternal life. Jesus told him to do all the things that have
been written in the law, including the part that said “love your neighbour as
yourself”. Then the lawyer asked Jesus “Who is my neighbour?”
In response to this question, Jesus said a man was traveling
from Jerusalem to Jericho but on the way, fell into the hands of robbers who
beat him and stripped him of his possession, then left him half dead.
Later, a Priest was passing by the same route and when he saw
the man, he passed by on the other side. After that, a Levite passed by and
when saw the man, he also passed by.
Then a Samaritan also passed by the same way. When he saw the
man, he had pity on him so he got down from his animal and dressed the wounds
of the wounded man, put him on his animal and to him to the hotel where he was
to lodge.
The next day, the Samaritan gave the hotel manager two
denarii to use it to take of the wounded man. He said upon his return if the
hotel manager spent anything more, he was ready to refund it to him.
After narrating the story, Jesus asked the lawyer who among
the three he thinks is the man’s neighbour and he replied that it was the man
who showed him mercy. The Jesus asked him to also go and do same.
LESSONS FROM THE
PARABLE
1. Humans must be ready to help one another regardless of the
dangers and consequences to one’s life or safety.
2. We must not assist people half way. Our assistance must be
total.
3. It is good to follow up after we have been of help to
somebody, just to see how the person is faring after the incident.
4. We must not behave like the priest and the Levite, who
passed the other way upon seeing the wounded man.
