THE ANOINTING AT BETHANY
While Jesus was at Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper, a woman entered and poured an alabaster flask full of expensive oil on Jesus as he sat at table with the disciples.

The disciples were very angry that such an expensive value of oil was wasted. They calculated that, the oil could have been sold and the proceeds given to the poor instead of wasting it in such a fashion.

Jesus rebuked them and said they should leave the woman alone and not to trouble her because what she had done was good. Jesus said they will always have the poor people with them but he was not going to be around for long.

Jesus also added that when the woman poured the oil on him, she had prepared his body well in advance for burial. He also added that wherever the gospel is preached, what the woman had done shall be told in memory of her.

One significant thing about the story is that it emphasizes Jesus love for the outcasts of the Jewish society of his days.

It is also significant in the sense that the poor have been with humanity for ages and would always be.
