The achievements of the National Democratic Congress



THE ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE NATIONAL DEMOCRATIC CONGRESS
Background history
The National Democratic Congress was formed in 1992 when Ghana was returning to democratic rule after about twenty years of military rule. The founder of the party if Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings, the last military leader before Ghana adopted the fourth republic.  

The National Democratic Party (NDC) won the elections in December, 1992 and was ushered into office in 1993. In the year 2000, it lost power to its main rival the New Patriotic Party (NPP) but regained power after eight years of the N.P.P. The N.D.C. ruled for eight years also and lost power again to the N.P.P.

ACHIEVEMENTS
Health
Under the N.D.C. governments, a lot of health infrastructures were developed. Many Regional Hospitals were built, polyclinics were built and nurses’ training facilities were expanded. The national health insurance which was piloted and fully implemented by the New Patriotic Party was expanded.

Education
The National Democratic Party increased educational facilities in many parts of the country. For example, the government embarked upon the building of 200 new secondary schools, 123 of which were started and 70 of them fully completed.  They converted most of the Polytechnics to Universities to train highly skilled manpower for industry. They started new universities in the Volta, Brong Ahafo, Northern, Western and eastern regions of the country.

Transport and aviation
The N.D.C. government achieved a lot in the fields of transport and aviation also. It for example, raised the standard of the Tamale airport to an international one from where flights can take off and land. For the first time in 2016, hajj pilgrims were lifted from the Tamale airport to Saudi Arabia. Many more roads were constructed and asphalt overlay done for most of the regional capitals and some major towns.

Water coverage
The National Democratic government under Mr. John Mahama, expanded rural water coverage from around 52 per cent in 2008 to 76 per cent in 2016. The same was achieved in urban water supply. Adenta and Madina in Accra which had not seen tap water for ages now has water flowing through its taps.

Trade and commerce
Another area of achievement for the N. D. C. government is trade and commerce. The government constructed a modern traditional market in the Central, Ashanti and Northern regions. It also did same for the Volta region to enhance trade and commerce in the local markets.  

Crime rate
The government of N.D.C. has managed to bring down the crime rate in the entire country. The spate of armed-robbery which was very high in the past was brought down. Petrol filling stations which could not operate after 9 pm, now operate 24 hours.
