The healing of the paralytic in Capernaum
This healing miracle of Jesus occurred in Capernaum which
appeared to have become the headquarters of his ministry.
While in Capernaum, Jesus was preaching in an enclosed place,
full to the brim with people who had gathered to listen to him. The large crowd
that had gathered had blocked the entrance to the place. It was therefore
nearly impossible for people to easily enter anymore.
Four friends had brought a man, their friend who was paralyzed
to Jesus to be healed. When they got there, there was no way they could enter
the presence of Jesus through the entrance door. The four friends, desperately
needing to get a healing for their friend, climbed onto the roof of the house,
removed part of the roofing material and lowered their paralytic friend on a
cloth, each holding each of the four corners of the cloth, right in front of
Jesus.
Jesus was moved by the faith that drove these four friends to
go that extra mile to get a healing for their friend. When Jesus opened his
mouth, he told the paralytic “My son, your sins are forgiven.” The Scribes who
were among the people were angry because they felt Jesus did not have the power
to forgive sins. They believed he had blasphemed.
Jesus perceived in his heart what they were thinking. He
said, “Why do you think evil in your hearts? For which is easier, to say, ‘Your
sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise and walk’? In order to show them that the
Son of Man has the power to forgive sins, Jesus told the paralytic to “Rise,
take up your bed and go home.” Immediately, the paralytic became healed. He
rose up and walked.
When the crowd saw this, they were afraid. They glorified God
for giving such authority to men.
WAYS IN WHICH GOD IS
STILL PERFORMING MIRACLES TODAY
1. One of the ways God is still performing miracles is that
people’s lifestyle is being changed from thieves and armed-robbery etc., to
committed Christians just by listening to the word of God.
2. God is also performing miracles through the healing that people
receive in the hands of nurses and doctors in various medical facilities.
3. Also people are being healed in many churches through the
power of God.
